The bad trip

A bad trip is a type of psychedelic experience that is primarily characterized by feelings of fear and anxiety, often accompanied by hallucinations. These experiences can be so intense that they lead to prolonged feelings of paranoia and negative emotions even after the trip has ended. While a bad trip is generally perceived as a negative experience, it is important to note that it can sometimes provide valuable insights and information, particularly if the individual is able to process the experience afterward.

Several factors can contribute to the occurrence of a bad trip, including the individual's intent, expectations, and the environment in which the trip takes place (often referred to as "set and setting"). Additionally, certain psychological conditions, such as borderline personality disorder, psychosis susceptibility, schizophrenia, and severe anxiety disorders, can significantly increase the likelihood of having a bad trip. Individuals with these conditions are generally advised against using psychedelics.

Common triggers for bad trips include:

- Presence of unsupportive individuals in the environment

- Listening to negative or unsettling music

- Fear of losing control or experiencing an eternal trip

- Confronting personal fears

- Experiencing intense hallucinations

- Hyperventilation

- High levels of glutamate in the brain

 

To mitigate the risk of a bad trip, it is recommended to have a trusted or professional tripsitter present, play positive music, and maintain a well-lit environment. Understanding that the experience is temporary and that there is life after the trip can also help alleviate fears. Furthermore, preparing adequately before the psychedelic session can significantly reduce the chances of encountering a bad trip.
