What happens when a close family member has experienced psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. Does this mean disapproval of psychedelic therapy?

Having a close family member with a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder does not automatically lead to disapproval for psychedelic therapy at Triptherapie, but it is treated as a potential risk factor that must be carefully assessed.

Genetic predisposition plays a role in psychiatric conditions, and psychedelic substances like psilocybin can interact with brain chemistry in ways that could activate underlying vulnerabilities (especially related to psychosis). This is why the presence of these conditions in first-degree relatives (such as parents or siblings) is considered during the intake process, but it does not instantly result in exclusion.

The team at Triptherapie uses this information as part of a broader risk profile. They will assess how distant or recent the psychiatric history is, whether the relative was diagnosed with a specific subtype (for example, Bipolar I versus Bipolar II), and whether you’ve ever shown early warning signs yourself. Your own mental health history and current stability are far more important than family history alone.

One key factor is age. If you are over 30 years old and have never experienced symptoms of psychosis, bipolar disorder, or other serious mental health conditions, the likelihood that psychedelic therapy is safe for you becomes much higher. Most genetically predisposed psychiatric conditions manifest before the age of 30. If you've passed that developmental window without issues, the risk of triggering a latent disorder is significantly lower.

So while caution is warranted, family history does not automatically block your path to psychedelic sessions. The decision is made on a case-by-case basis, with your safety and long-term well-being as the guiding priority.
